How to set up a Linksys Mesh router

If you need to reset the parent router (router connected to your modem), there are a few methods on how to set up your router and child nodes again. This article applies to Linksys MBE7000, MX6200, and LN1400 models using a DHCP (Automatic) internet connection type.

Before you begin:

  •
  • If your service provider uses PPPoE, you can follow these setup instructions.
  • Write down the default WiFi name, password, and recovery key found at the bottom of the parent router.
  • Parent router: The parent router is the node that will be connected to your modem.
  • Child node: An additional node used to extend your WiFi, such as another Linksys Mesh router.
  • Mixed environments: A network with Linksys Intelligent Mesh™ nodes and Linksys Cognitive™ Mesh nodes.
    • In a mixed network such as Linksys MBE7000, LN1400, or an MX6200, the Linksys MBE7000 or LN1400 should be the parent router for better WiFi performance.

What's required:

  • Pair button setup: A mobile device or computer is required to customize your settings.
  • Plug-N-Play setup wizard: A mobile device or computer is required to customize your settings.
  • Web browser setup: A computer is required to customize your settings.
  • 5-Button Push setup: A mobile device or computer is required to customize your settings.
  • Linksys app setup: A mobile device with the latest Linksys app installed is required to customize your settings.

Choose one of the following setup methods below:

In these examples, the Linksys MBE7000 is set up as the parent node.

Pair button setup

This is the easiest and quickest way to set up the parent and child nodes simultaneously. A mobile device or computer is required to customize your settings after the setup is completed.

Images may vary depending on the model.

1. Gather all your equipment in the same area as your modem. After setup, you can relocate your child nodes.

2. Remove any existing router:

a. I have a modem with a separate router.

      • Disconnect your existing router.
      • Power cycle your modem.
      • Wait until your modem has rebooted and go to the next step.

b. I have a WiFi router and modem in one device, or I do not have any existing routers in my home.

      • Go to the next step.

3. Connect the parent router with an ethernet cable from the Internet port to your modem and power it ON.

An image of a node's back panel showing the internet (for the modem) and power ports.

4. If adding child nodes, place all child nodes near the parent router, no more than 10 ft away, preferably in the same room, and power them ON. Wait until all your nodes have a solid blue light, indicating they are ready for setup.

Do not plug any ethernet devices into any of the child nodes' ports during setup.

If any of the nodes have a red light, reset them by holding down the reset button for about 15 seconds, then wait until the light becomes solid blue.

5. Once all your nodes have a solid blue light, press the Pair button for at least 1 second on the Parent router to start the setup process.

6. The light on the parent router will begin blinking white, which indicates the setup is in progress. It will also scan for unconfigured nodes.

This Pair button is supported on the latest firmware. If the parent router's light doesn't begin to blink white, the router may be on an older firmware. You can set up the network using other methods.

9. Open a desktop browser and enter "www.myrouter.info" or "myrouter.info" in the Address bar and hit [ENTER]. You can also use the IP address of the parent router, which is https://192.168.1.1.

10. If you receive any browser warning messages,
follow these instructions to bypass the browser message.

11. Wait for the status light on the parent router to turn solid white. This indicates the router has detected an internet connection.

Red light?

If the router ends up with a solid red light, this indicates that the router did not detect an internet connection.

Follow the suggested steps depending on your internet connection type:

  • Automatic/DHCP:
    • Make sure the modem is plugged into the Internet port on the Linksys parent router.
    • Power cycle the modem and wait for the modem to come back online.
    • Then wait a few minutes to see if the light on the Linksys router changes to solid white; this may take up to 2 minutes.
  • PPPoE or other: If you have a PPPoE or other connection type that requires entering your ISP settings, click here for more information. Make sure to connect to the new WIFI name to change these settings.

12. Connect your computer to the new WiFi name you just created.

13. If you previously powered on child nodes to add, make sure they are near the parent router, no more than 10 ft apart; the closer the better during setup. Child nodes should have a solid blue light indicating they are ready for setup.

Refrain from connecting any devices to the child nodes except for the power adapter.

If the light is red, hold down the Reset button on the new child for about 15 seconds, and wait for it to turn solid blue before continuing.

14. In the CA Router Setup tab, click on Add Wireless Child Nodes

The router will begin scanning for unconfigured nodes. This will take a few minutes.

The 5-Button Push method is another method to set up the parent and child nodes at the same time. It is similar to the Pair button setup, but this method uses the Reset button instead and works on any firmware version. If your router has a Pair button, using the Pair button method is highly recommended.

1. Gather all your equipment in the same area as your modem. After the nodes are set up, you can relocate your child nodes as needed.

4. If adding child nodes, place all child nodes near the parent router, no more than 10 ft away, preferably in the same room, and power them ON. Wait until all your nodes have a solid blue light.

Do not plug any ethernet devices into any of the child nodes' ports during setup.

If any of the nodes have a red light, reset them by holding down the reset button for about 15 seconds, then wait until the light becomes solid blue.

5. Once all the nodes have a solid blue light, press the Reset button five times within 5 seconds (DO NOT HOLD). It is located at the bottom of the Linksys parent router that is connected to the modem. The light on the parent router will start blinking white.

DO NOT HOLD down the reset button as this will activate the factory reset process, and you will have to wait until the router resets, reboots, and comes back to a solid blue light.
