An Internet Protocol (IP) address is a unique identifier that consists of four sets of numbers from 0 to 255, separated by three dots. This is required for devices in the network to connect to the internet. By default, the IP address of a Linksys router is 192.168.1.1.

Why is this needed?

Changing your router’s IP address is useful for certain scenarios, such as preventing IP address conflicts with your router and modem or connecting your router to another router. An IP address conflict occurs when two or more devices on the network have the same IP address, leading to internet connection loss.
 

To change a router’s IP address, follow the steps below.

1. Log in to the router's web interface.
 

2. Click Connectivity.
 

3. Click the Local Network tab.
 

4. Click Edit.
 

6. Enter the IP address you want for your router.

The IP address you can use for your router can be:

• 10.0.0.0 to 10.255.255.255
• 172.16.0.0 to 172.31.255.255
• 192.168.0.0 to 192.168.255.255

The Host name is the router’s name, while the Subnet mask divides a network into subnets so information can be routed correctly to your computers and devices. 

6. Under DHCP Server, change the Start IP address to the same IP address range as your router. The range can be from 2 to 254.
 

In this scenario, the new IP address is 192.168.5.1; therefore, the start IP address is now 192.168.5.100.
 

7. Click the Apply button at the page's lower right corner.

8. On the pop-up screen, click Ok.
 

9. Power OFF your router for 30 seconds and power it ON again.
 

Your router will now have the new IP address. In the future, you will need to use this IP address when you log in to the router.
